Trump Vows Supreme Court Appeal Over White House Renovations

The administration of Donald Trump is planning at least $900 million in construction and modernization projects on the White House grounds. These plans include a 90,000-square-foot complex in the East Wing featuring a 22,000-square-foot ballroom and a six-story underground bunker. Trump has described the larger unit as vital for national security and military operations and has discussed using the roof as a launching pad for drones and lethal weapons.

To fund these projects, the administration avoided seeking direct congressional appropriations. Instead, it gathered funds from private donors and other government agencies, directing the money into an account typically reserved for routine maintenance.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit recently ruled 2-1 that the president cannot proceed with the East Wing renovations without congressional approval, stating that presidents are temporary tenants of the White House. The ruling followed a lawsuit brought by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Trump has vowed to appeal this decision to the Supreme Court of the United States.
