Segun Aina Succeeds Ishaq Oloyede as JAMB Registrar

Professor Segun Aina formally assumed leadership of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on July 31, 2026, during a handover ceremony at the board's national headquarters in Bwari, Abuja. Aina, a professor of computer engineering appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on May 21, is the youngest person to hold the registrar position. He pledged to consolidate existing reforms and confront examination fraud, impersonation, and cybercrime to protect the credibility of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

He succeeds Professor Is-haq Olanrewaju Oloyede, who led the agency for a decade after his 2016 appointment by former President Muhammadu Buhari. Oloyede transformed the agency from a corrupt entity plagued by fraud into a transparent regulator through biometric controls, computer-based testing, and the Central Admissions Processing System. These reforms increased federal treasury remittances from under N60 million to over N55 billion and reduced UTME application costs by 30 percent.

Oloyede also focused on staff welfare, committing N8 billion to retirement savings and introducing a 13th-month salary. Despite these achievements, he acknowledged past challenges, including 2025 technical glitches and a 2017 scandal involving the alleged loss of N36 million. Aina inherits the institution amid rising operational costs, which may quadruple to over N16 billion following a federal review of civil servant benefits in October, as well as ongoing threats from AI-driven fraud.
