Donald Trump Proposes Golden Fleet to Counter China's Navy

Donald Trump introduced a plan to establish a Golden Fleet to address structural deficiencies and capacity gaps in the United States Navy. The initiative aims to reverse a trend where the U.S. armada, currently numbering just under 300 ships, trails the fleet of over 370 ships operated by China.

During a presentation at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, the president unveiled renderings of a new Trump Class ship alongside Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Secretary of the Navy John C. Phelan. The proposal comes as existing shipbuilding programs struggle to reach a target of 381 ships by 2054. According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies, 37 of the 45 battle-force ships currently under construction are facing delays.

Strategic concerns regarding missile capacity further drove the proposal. The Centre for Strategic and International Studies indicates that China is expected to field more sea-based vertical launch tubes for missile capacity than the United States by next year.
