Satellite Data Reveals Billions in Damage to U.S. Bases

Satellite imagery and data analysis show Iran caused up to $15 billion in damage to 24 U.S. military installations during an eight-month conflict.

Satellite imagery and data analysis reveal that Iran caused significant damage to 24 U.S. military installations across seven Middle Eastern countries during a war that began on February 28, 2026. Investigations by The Wall Street Journal and the Associated Press identified 274 damaged structures, with base repair costs estimated between $5 billion and $15 billion. Total war costs reached $47.1 billion as of October 16, 2026.

Iranian forces executed over 115 drone and missile strikes, initially targeting early-warning radar and aircraft hangars to degrade detection capabilities. Following a ceasefire collapse on July 7, tactics shifted toward precision strikes on troop housing and communications. Notable losses include the destruction of a rare Army radar in Jordan and damage to a Boeing E-3 Sentry aircraft in Saudi Arabia. The deadliest incident occurred on March 1 at Port Shuaiba in Kuwait, where six soldiers were killed.

While President Donald Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth publicly claimed Iran's military capabilities were defeated or spent, the U.S. military has privately moved personnel and assets out of the Persian Gulf to avoid further retaliation. The Pentagon has declined to provide specific damage assessments, and the administration has delayed the release of satellite imagery. Despite these findings, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell maintains that U.S. forces remain well protected.
