ASEAN Urges US and Iran to End Conflict

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations called on the United States and Iran to resume negotiations to permanently end a conflict that began in late February. The appeal follows the collapse of peace talks and a decision by US President Donald Trump to blockade all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports starting Monday, April 13, 2026.

During a virtual meeting on Monday, ASEAN foreign ministers urged the full and effective implementation of a ceasefire that had taken effect on April 8. The bloc specifically demanded the restoration of safe, unimpeded transit for vessels and aircraft in the Strait of Hormuz to protect global energy flows and food supplies. ASEAN warned that maritime instability could increase shipping costs and trigger global inflationary pressures.

Beyond the diplomatic appeal, the ministers discussed joint strategies to secure fertilizer and critical agricultural inputs and explored the creation of a rapid crisis communications protocol. Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro briefed officials on prioritizing energy supplies to member states during crises. As the current ASEAN chair, the Philippines confirmed it will hold a leaders' summit in May to focus on energy security, food security, and the safety of nationals. The bloc also commended the Government of Pakistan for its mediation efforts.
