Iranian Factions Clash Over US Diplomacy and War Strategy

Iranian political factions are engaged in public infighting over the country's war strategy and diplomatic engagement with the United States. Masoud Pezeshkian, the President of Iran, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi lead a pragmatist wing advocating for a strategic agreement and sanctions relief to alleviate severe economic distress.

Hardline clerics and politicians, including Saeed Jalili and Mohammad Bagher Kharazi, oppose negotiations with the administration of Donald Trump. They argue that such engagement diminishes the principles of the Islamic Revolution, with Jalili calling for the death of the former Supreme Leader to be avenged rather than pursuing negotiated sanctions removal.

This friction has intensified following the March ascension of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. While Khamenei's limited public visibility initially created a leadership vacuum, the government is now shifting toward a harder line. Khamenei recently appointed IRGC veteran Mohsen Rezaee to lead the Supreme National Security Council and confirmed several top military appointments.

Despite internal disputes, the Iranian state is consolidating around a strategy of deterrence. This approach specifically leverages the Strait of Hormuz to maintain pressure, leaving Tehran and Washington in a diplomatic deadlock.
