Lisa Cook Challenges Trump Investigation Into Mortgage Fraud Allegations
Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook is fighting a White House investigation launched by Donald Trump to remove her over denied mortgage fraud allegations.
Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook is challenging a White House investigation initiated by President Donald Trump to remove her from her position. The probe focuses on unproven allegations of mortgage fraud, which Cook denies. This effort follows a August 2025 Supreme Court ruling that blocked a previous attempt by Trump to fire Cook on procedural grounds.
Cook's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, has questioned the objectivity and fitness of the investigation committee, which includes political appointees Kevin Hassett, Keith Sonderling, and Andrea Lucas. Lowell argues the committee's composition fails to respect the independence of the Federal Reserve. Due to Cook's duties in Europe, her legal team has declined a November 5 hearing and proposed a date after December 9.
President Trump has described Cook as "dishonest" and stated he would fire her if the committee finds cause for removal. Meanwhile, committee member Kevin Hassett has publicly called for Cook to take a leave of absence, suggesting her refusal to do so indicates she is being partisan.
