Iranian Speaker Urges Muslim Nations to Build Homegrown Security

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf called on regional Muslim nations to establish an indigenous security architecture, arguing that stability can only be achieved through homegrown cooperation rather than reliance on external powers. In messages shared during Unity Week and on X, Qalibaf characterized security dependent on extra-regional intervention as fragile and dependent, asserting that regional alliances would allow neighbors to rely on their own capabilities.

This push for self-reliance aligns with a mutual security and non-aggression pact proposed by President Masoud Pezeshkian at the 40th International Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran. The proposed pact would commit Muslim states to respecting each other's territorial sovereignty and integrity. Iranian officials, including Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei, have further argued that security is not a commodity to be purchased from unreliable brokers.

Tehran cited the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement—a collective deterrence pact between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan—as evidence that regional nations are increasingly questioning security assurances from the United States. These diplomatic efforts follow a period of heightened instability, including joint military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28 and subsequent Iranian retaliatory strikes against U.S. bases.
