US National Debt Surpasses $40 Trillion
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Vice President JD Vance argue the US can grow its way out of a record $40 trillion national debt.
The United States national debt surpassed $40 trillion last week, sparking a conflict between administration officials and economic analysts over fiscal sustainability. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent dismissed the milestone as insignificant, asserting that the country can grow its way out of the debt.
Vice President JD Vance supported this position, stating that President Donald Trump backs a plan to ensure economic growth exceeds debt accumulation. Vance characterized the current situation as a debt bomb inherited from the Biden administration.
Economists have expressed skepticism regarding the feasibility of this strategy. Kent Smetters of the Wharton School argued the growth-based approach is not viable, while Ray Dalio of Bridgewater Associates warned of a potential debt crisis within three years, urging a reduction of budget deficits to 3% of GDP. Data from Fiscal Lab indicates that eliminating the deficit through growth alone would require an annual GDP growth rate of 4.31%, which significantly exceeds the 1.8% growth projected by the Congressional Budget Office.
