Israeli Soldier Suicides Rise to 16 in 2026

The number of active-duty Israel Defense Forces soldiers who have died by suicide in 2026 has risen to 16 following the recent deaths of two female soldiers. One soldier, a member of the Bar-Lass Battalion, died Tuesday morning at a military base in southern occupied Palestine. The second, a classified operative within the Military Intelligence Directorate, died Sunday at the Glilot base near Ramat Hasharon. Reports indicate the intelligence officer had previously been denied requests for early discharge or reduced duties due to psychological distress.

Israeli military police have opened investigations into both cases. Data tracked by the newspaper Haaretz shows a multi-year upward trend, including 22 serving personnel suicides in 2025, the highest figure in 15 years. Nine former combat soldiers have also died by suicide since late 2025.

Military officials and analysts attribute the surge to the psychological toll of prolonged combat operations and PTSD resulting from nearly three years of fighting in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and Iran. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to defend these operations, while opposition politicians argue that the conflict strains military readiness and is driven by Netanyahu's domestic political calculations.
