India and New Zealand Establish Strategic Partnership in Auckland

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon elevated bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership and pledged to double trade by 2030.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon elevated the bilateral relationship between India and New Zealand to a Strategic Partnership during a historic two-day visit to Auckland on July 10-11, 2026. This marked the first visit by an Indian prime minister to New Zealand in 40 years and concluded a regional tour including stops in Indonesia and Australia. The leaders adopted the "Roadmap to 2030," which aims to double two-way trade in goods and services to NZD 7 billion by 2030. The agreement builds on a Free Trade Agreement signed in April 2026, though a point of clarification emerged: Modi described a clause as a "commitment" to US$20 billion in private investment over 15 years, while Luxon clarified it as a "commitment to promote" such investment.

The partnership establishes a comprehensive security framework, including a Maritime Cooperation Arrangement, a Mutual Logistics Support Arrangement, and a Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism. Both leaders issued an absolute condemnation of terrorism, specifically citing 2025 attacks in Pahalgam and New Delhi. New Zealand further supported India's bid for a permanent seat on a reformed UN Security Council.

Beyond security, the two nations signed 18 outcomes across agriculture, education, and digital technology, such as integrating India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with New Zealand's payment network. Despite the diplomatic success, the visit faced protests from Sikh activists and anti-immigration groups, while the New Zealand First party expressed domestic opposition to immigration provisions within the trade deal.
