Indian Leaders Honor Udham Singh and Munshi Premchand

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior Indian officials observed two distinct commemorations on July 31, 2026, honoring revolutionary freedom fighter Udham Singh and celebrated writer Munshi Premchand. Throughout the day, leaders used social media and official statements to highlight the legacies of both men.

Commemorations for Udham Singh marked the anniversary of his 1940 execution at Pentonville Prison in London. Leaders, including Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, praised Singh's role in the Ghadar Party and his assassination of Michael O'Dwyer as an act of vengeance for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre. In Rudrapur, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami unveiled a 9-foot bronze statue of Singh at the Rudrapur Collectorate premises. The statue, costing Rs 40 lakh, was unveiled alongside the inauguration of several public infrastructure projects exceeding Rs 385 lakh.

Simultaneously, the government marked the birth anniversary of Munshi Premchand. Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the writer as the 'Emperor of Storytelling,' noting that his work remains a timeless source of inspiration rooted in realism and social equality. Officials highlighted Premchand's profound influence on Hindi and Urdu fiction and his ability to depict the aspirations of marginalized Indian society.
