Russia Targets Starlink Infrastructure in European Hybrid Warfare Campaign

Western officials attribute a series of sabotage attacks on Starlink infrastructure across Europe to Russia while Ukraine seeks satellite alternatives to reduce U.S. reliance.

Western intelligence agencies and officials have linked a series of sabotage attempts against Starlink infrastructure across Europe to Russian hybrid warfare. Recent incidents include a thwarted attack near Vilnius, Lithuania, a fire at a satellite station near Warsaw, Poland, and attacks on antennas near Sofia, Bulgaria. These follow a March 2024 arson attack on a London warehouse storing Starlink equipment, which British authorities previously tied to Russian intelligence.

Kęstutis Budrys, the Foreign Minister of Lithuania, characterized these actions as part of a coordinated campaign to intimidate European allies and undermine Ukrainian defense. While the Kremlin denies involvement, officials in Poland and Lithuania describe the events as hybrid warfare.

Parallel to these attacks, SpaceX is facing political scrutiny over unexplained speed restrictions on Starshield, the military-grade version of Starlink, which disrupted Ukrainian drone operations. Elon Musk attributed these restrictions to the U.S. government, though other reports suggest he ordered the disruptions. In response, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and leaders in Canada and the European Parliament have called for the development of independent satellite alternatives to eliminate reliance on U.S.-controlled technology.
