UN Secretary-General Condemns Israeli Settler Attacks in West Bank

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned a series of attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank. The violence included arson attacks on two mosques, the vandalism of private property, and targeted assaults on Palestinian civilians and their livelihoods.

Speaking through spokesperson Farhan Haq, Guterres described the attacks on places of worship as "heinous and unacceptable," warning that such actions risk further inflaming the volatile region. He urged Israeli authorities to implement immediate and effective measures to protect civilians and prevent continued settler violence.

Guterres demanded that those responsible for the attacks be swiftly identified and held accountable in accordance with international law. These incidents occur amid a broader escalation of violence in the West Bank following the start of the conflict in Gaza in October 2023, which Palestinian figures state has resulted in at least 1,182 deaths and 13,000 injuries in the occupied territory.
