Iran Fortifies Nuclear Sites as Trump Threatens Military Action

Satellite imagery reveals that Iran is fortifying sensitive nuclear and military sites to protect them from aerial strikes and special forces raids. At the Parchin military complex, Iran constructed a new facility called Taleghan 2, encasing it in a concrete sarcophagus covered with soil to hide it from surveillance. In Isfahan, the government completely buried three tunnel entrances at a nuclear complex previously bombed by the United States to secure enriched uranium. Additional hardening is underway at the Pickaxe Mountain tunnel complex near Natanz, while missile bases in Qom and Shiraz South are undergoing reconstruction following a 12-day war last year.

These military preparations coincide with fragile diplomatic efforts. While U.S. and Iranian representatives reached an understanding on guiding principles during talks in Geneva on February 17, a full agreement remains elusive due to U.S. demands regarding Iran's ballistic missiles. The Institute for Science and International Security noted that stalling negotiations allows Iran to make facilities like Taleghan 2 unrecognizable bunkers.

In response to the impasse, President Donald Trump ordered a second aircraft carrier to the region and suggested the U.S. may use an airbase in the Chagos Islands to eradicate potential attacks if a deal is not reached. Simultaneously, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps conducted war games in the Strait of Hormuz and joint naval drills with Russia in the Sea of Oman.
