Flávio Bolsonaro Vows Constitutional Changes After First-Round Victory

Presidential frontrunner Flávio Bolsonaro pledged to re-democratise Brazil through constitutional changes, sparking accusations of an attempted coup from political opponents.

Presidential frontrunner Flávio Bolsonaro vowed to re-democratise Brazil following a first-round election victory over incumbent president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Speaking at a campaign event in Goiânia, Bolsonaro indicated he intends to leverage the far-right's increased presence in congress to alter the national constitution.

Political opponents and historians have characterized this rhetoric as a precursor to a coup d'état. Congresswoman Talíria Petrone described the statements as the announcement of a coup, while congressman Marcelo Freixo argued that the movement is seeking to undo the re-democratisation of 1988. Critics claim Bolsonaro is using democratic language to mask an illiberal shift similar to the goals of his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro.

Jair Bolsonaro is currently imprisoned for attempting to engineer a coup after the 2022 election. If Flávio Bolsonaro wins the October 25 run-off, he is expected to release his father from prison and potentially appoint him as a minister.
