Russia Conducts Live-Fire Naval Exercise Off UK Coast

The Russian frigate Neustrashimy conducted a 30-minute live-fire artillery exercise in international waters approximately 40 to 46 miles south of Plymouth on Monday, July 20, 2026. Before opening fire, the Russian vessel notified the Royal Navy patrol ship HMS Tyne of its intentions and requested that the British ship move to a safer distance, a request the HMS Tyne granted.

Wes Streeting, the UK Defence Secretary, condemned the maneuvers as "performative and irresponsible." He stated that Russia should be in no doubt about the resolve of the government and Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who had assumed office only one day prior. The exercise was monitored by the Royal Navy and a French military aircraft. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the Royal Navy continues to track the vessel's activity to protect national security.

The incident follows a period of heightened tension in the English Channel, including the June seizure of a Russian shadow fleet tanker by British marines and a previous incident involving the Russian warship Admiral Grigorovich firing warning shots at a civilian yacht. Amid these tensions, Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband held his first diplomatic call with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha to discuss military assistance, while Streeting met with defense ministers from Japan, Italy, and Canada regarding the Global Combat Air Programme.
