Israeli Forces Arrest 32 Palestinians Amid West Bank Raids
Israeli forces arrested 32 Palestinians and shot a teenager during widespread West Bank raids on July 16, while the UN criticized a new settlement designation.
Israeli forces conducted widespread raids across the occupied West Bank on July 16, 2026, resulting in the arrest of 32 Palestinians. The operations targeted former prisoners and young men in Bethlehem, Qalqilya, Tubas, Tulkarem, and occupied Jerusalem, with 13 detentions occurring in Beit Ummar. During a raid in Bani Naim, east of Hebron, soldiers shot a 16-year-old boy in the chest with live ammunition. In Ramin, Israeli forces destroyed a Palestinian vehicle and an agricultural tractor by fire.
Concurrent attacks by Israeli settlers were reported across the territory. In Abu Njeim, settlers beat a 30-year-old man, and in Khirbet Emneizal, settlers attacked a family and stole sheep before security forces arrived to assault residents and arrest seven individuals. Palestinian sources claim these escalating actions are intended to pave the way for the formal annexation of the West Bank.
On the diplomatic front, António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, expressed alarm after Israel granted city status to the Givat Ze’ev settlement. The United Nations maintains that this designation does not change the legal status of the area, which remains occupied Palestinian territory under international law. These events follow a reported surge in settler violence, with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs recording an average of six attacks on Palestinians or their property daily this year.
