Political Figures Clash Over Bola Tinubu's 2027 Re-election Prospects

Political figures in Nigeria are offering conflicting assessments of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his prospects for the 2027 presidential election. Former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba publicly urged Nigerians to re-elect the president during a centenary lecture for Afenifere leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti in Lagos. Osoba described Tinubu as the first progressive president and a successor to the egalitarian legacy of Obafemi Awolowo, praising the administration for increasing allocations to state governors for worker salaries.

Conversely, Kayode Ogundamisi, former secretary general of the Odua Peoples Congress, warned that Tinubu could lose the 2027 election if citizens unite against current economic hardships. While Ogundamisi acknowledged the president's ability to build a coalition among the political class and state governors, he argued that Tinubu has failed to build a similar coalition among the general population. Ogundamisi further accused the administration of using fake government agencies and concurrent budgets to steal funds.

Regarding potential challengers, Ogundamisi identified Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress as the preferred opponent due to his compassion and the principle of rotational presidency, suggesting that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar should step aside.
