Trump Dismantles Federal Election Security Guardrails for Midterms

President Donald Trump removed dozens of career election security officials and purged specialized federal units to exert greater control over upcoming midterm elections.

President Donald Trump has systematically dismantled federal election security guardrails during his second term to increase administration control over the upcoming midterm elections. A ProPublica investigation reveals the removal of at least 75 career officials from the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice, replacing them with political appointees, including some who previously attempted to overturn 2020 election results.

The administration gutted the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and reduced the Department of Justice Public Integrity Section from 36 members to two. Additionally, the FBI's public corruption team and Foreign Influence Task Force were disbanded. A group of appointees called Team America is reportedly utilizing Department of Homeland Security tools to identify noncitizen voters.

In Georgia, Director of Election Security and Integrity Kurt Olsen orchestrated an FBI raid on an election center in Fulton County to seize ballots from 2020. This action followed the retirement of the FBI's original Atlanta office head, who had resisted the effort.

Democratic leaders and election security advocates warn that these purges undermine the integrity of the midterms by removing nonpartisan expertise. Critics argue the shift toward political appointments creates a conflict of interest that may enable the administration to interfere with vote counting and challenge legitimate results through federal pressure.
