US Treasury Warns Foreign Banks Against Iranian Transactions

The United States Department of the Treasury warned foreign financial institutions that transacting with Iran may trigger immediate sanctions without advance notification.

The United States Department of the Treasury warned foreign financial institutions on Monday that conducting business with Iran or its banking sector could result in immediate sanctions without advance notification. This alert is part of a broader campaign launched in late August to economically isolate Tehran, targeting the cryptocurrency, rail, automotive, manufacturing, and financial sectors.

The Treasury accused the Iranian government of utilizing shadow banking channels to bypass existing restrictions. As part of this enforcement, the agency has already sanctioned two banks located in the United Arab Emirates and Turkiye for allegedly aiding Tehran.

These economic measures follow a military conflict initiated by the United States in late February, which resulted in the death of Iranian leadership and U.S. demands for the cessation of nuclear activities. The conflict has triggered regional violence and caused global energy and fertilizer prices to surge after Iran obstructed a key trading route in retaliation against U.S. allies in the Gulf.
