Oil Prices Surge as Tanker Attacks Hit Strait of Hormuz

Crude oil prices hit six-month highs following intensified Iranian and Houthi attacks on Middle East shipping and infrastructure, prompting U.S. consideration of sanctions relief.

Crude oil prices have surged to six-month highs, with Brent crude trading near $117 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate remaining above $100. The spike follows escalating military tensions in the Middle East, specifically intensified attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and Houthi strikes on Saudi Arabian infrastructure, including the Yanbu port and Shaybah oil field.

Data from the UK Maritime Trade Operations and the International Maritime Organization indicate at least 28 vessels were targeted in the Strait of Hormuz this month, including 11 supertankers. While Kpler data shows October exports from the Middle East have exceeded levels seen before February strikes on Iran, the region faces severe instability. These attacks have pushed freight rates to record highs and increased ship-to-ship transfers off the coast of Oman.

To address the resulting shortage of oil carriers, Donald Trump is considering lifting sanctions on certain tankers used for Russian oil. However, S&P Global Energy analysts warn that such relief may not significantly increase mainstream tanker capacity.

The economic fallout has reached global markets, with Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers warning that fuel prices are unlikely to return to pre-conflict levels until 2030. This trend has raised concerns over global stagflation and may prompt the Reserve Bank of Australia to hike interest rates to combat inflation.
