Anwar Ibrahim and Sanae Takaichi Forge High-Tech Japan-Malaysia Pact

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim visited Tokyo to secure Japanese cooperation on semiconductors, AI, maritime security, and market access for Malaysian small businesses.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim conducted a three-day official visit to Tokyo, concluding June 10, 2026, to strengthen a comprehensive strategic partnership with Japan. During a meeting at the Kantei with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, the two leaders signed a coast guard cooperation document to ensure regional maritime security and agreed to establish a Japan-Malaysia AI Platform to support domestic artificial intelligence firms.

Addressing the 31st Nikkei Forum, Anwar Ibrahim called for deeper collaboration in high-end technology, specifically targeting semiconductors, advanced packaging, and quantum computing. He noted that Malaysia's assembly and testing strengths complement Japan's leadership in materials and manufacturing. The Malaysian leader also welcomed Japan's April defense policy changes regarding the export of lethal equipment, stating it expands bilateral defense possibilities. He further advocated for a partnership to develop the Asean Power Grid and transition Asia toward a lower-carbon future.

The visit also focused on economic resilience for smaller enterprises through the Bank Rakyat BizMatch program. This initiative connected seven Malaysian firms with 27 Japanese companies in sectors like green technology and agriculture, with expectations to generate over RM500 million in transactions within one year. Minister Steven Sim linked these efforts to the government's ABCD framework, emphasizing the need for micro, small, and medium enterprises to capture larger global market shares amid geopolitical supply chain disruptions.
