Lawyers Sue President Tinubu for Peter Obi Security Protection

The Obidient Lawyers Forum filed a suit seeking maximum security for presidential candidate Peter Obi following threats and a previous armed attack in Edo State.

The Obidient Lawyers Forum filed a fundamental rights suit on July 27, 2026, at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to compel President Bola Tinubu and security agencies to provide maximum protection for Peter Obi. The lawsuit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1648/2026, identifies the Nigerian Police Force and the Department of State Services as respondents responsible for preventing a potential political assassination of the Nigerian Democratic Congress presidential candidate.

The legal action follows statements from Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo suggesting Obi's safety could not be guaranteed in Edo State without gubernatorial approval. The request for enhanced security also stems from a February 2026 incident in Benin City, where armed hoodlums opened fire on Obi, African Democratic Congress leader John Oyegun, and members of the Obidient Movement.

Following the court's decision to hear the case, Arise News anchor Rufai Oseni publicly advocated for Obi's protection during a broadcast of the Morning Show. Oseni cited the unresolved deaths of political leaders Bola Ige and Funsho Williams as a warning that the safety of political leaders must not be taken for granted to ensure Obi remains present for the next election.
