Trump Administration Targets 2,000 Daily Immigration Arrests at Airports

The administration of Donald Trump has expanded immigration enforcement at U.S. airports, targeting a goal of 2,000 arrests per day. United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is deploying plainclothes agents to at least 15 airports to detain foreign nationals who have overstayed their visas, including those who are spouses of U.S. citizens or hold valid work authorizations.

This crackdown relies on an expanded partnership with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which allows airlines to automatically match passenger information with immigration databases. While previous administrations typically prioritized the detention of individuals with criminal records, current efforts target a broader pool of immigrants. Recent detentions include a Southwest Airlines flight attendant in Nashville, a Ukrainian national in San Francisco, and an Ecuadorian national in Denver.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) maintains that pending residency applications or work authorizations do not confer legal status. However, the American Immigration Lawyers Association reports that these actions have turned airports into high-risk zones for those in a legal gray zone, such as those awaiting administrative processing or visa extensions.
