Trump Administration Expands ICE Arrests at 15 U.S. Airports

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has expanded immigration enforcement at at least 15 U.S. airports, deploying plainclothes Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to arrest foreign nationals who have overstayed their visas. This initiative is part of President Donald Trump's broader mass deportation agenda, which includes a White House target of approximately 2,000 arrests per day. The surge is part of a larger nationwide increase in activity, with 43,138 arrests recorded in June 2026, the highest monthly total since the president returned to office.

Enforcement actions are facilitated by a May 2025 data-sharing agreement between the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and ICE. This arrangement allows the TSA to match passenger information with immigration databases and provide tips to ICE. While previous administrations typically prioritized the detention of individuals with criminal records, the current crackdown targets a wider pool, including spouses of U.S. citizens, asylum seekers with pending applications, and skilled workers with valid work authorizations.

Recent detentions have occurred at hubs including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, and Nashville. High-profile incidents include the arrest of a Southwest Airlines flight attendant in Nashville and an Ecuadorian national in Denver. Legal advocates, including the American Immigration Lawyers Association, warn that airports have become high-risk zones for domestic travel. The administration maintains that pending applications do not confer legal status and that the policy ensures undocumented immigrants cannot fly domestically unless they are self-deporting.
