Pete Hegseth Overhauls Military Officer Promotion System
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced a comprehensive review of military officer promotions to prioritize warfighting experience over administrative box-checking and diversity initiatives.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced a comprehensive overhaul of the United States Department of Defense promotion and selection system for the military officer corps. The initiative seeks to prioritize warfighters over risk-averse officers who advance by checking boxes or playing the game. Stuart Scheller, senior adviser to the DOD undersecretary in personnel and readiness, is leading a review of the entire selection and retention process, including performance evaluations, command selections, and professional military education.
This reform is part of a broader Trump administration effort to restore a warrior ethos within the military. The plan includes the removal of critical race theory and diversity, equity, and inclusion practices. A memo issued to military department secretaries mandates that objective standards must drive the promotion process to increase force lethality.
As part of these new standards, the administration stated that individuals expressing a false gender identity cannot meet the rigorous requirements for military service. The Department of Defense characterized the talent management of the officer corps as a top priority to enhance the overall lethality of the force.
