Trump Proposes Painting Eisenhower Executive Office Building White

President Donald Trump proposed painting the Eisenhower Executive Office Building white, sparking a lawsuit from preservationists over potential structural damage to the granite facade.

President Donald Trump submitted a proposal to the Commission of Fine Arts to paint the slate-gray exterior of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building bright white. The plan argues that the Gilded Age structure, completed in 1888, lacks symbolic cohesion with the White House and has suffered from structural neglect since the 19th century. Trump advocated for a silicate-based magic paint he claims will strengthen the stone, prevent staining, and block water infiltration.

The proposal offers two options: a full white repaint or a partial repaint that preserves the original granite on the basement levels. This initiative is part of a larger effort to reshape Washington, D.C., which includes constructing a 250-foot triumphal arch on Memorial Circle and renaming the Kennedy Center as the Trump-Kennedy Center.

Preservationist groups, including the D.C. Preservation League and Cultural Heritage Partners, have filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to halt the project. They argue the administration is bypassing required historic preservation reviews. Additionally, a panel of 25 experts concluded that mineral silicate paints are incompatible with granite and could cause permanent, irreversible damage to the building's facade. The Commission of Fine Arts, whose members were replaced by Trump appointees in January, is scheduled to review the design renderings on April 16.
