China Escalates Military Patrols Near Taiwan as Trump Vows Action

China's People's Liberation Army conducted sustained military operations near Taiwan from May 19 through May 21, 2026, deploying dozens of aircraft and multiple naval vessels in what it termed joint combat readiness patrols. On May 19, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense released rare surveillance images documenting the exercise, which involved 22 aircraft—including J-10 and J-16 fighter jets and KJ-500 early warning aircraft—entering Taiwan's air defense identification zone. Eleven aircraft crossed the Taiwan Strait median line. The imagery included a J-16 fighter captured by an F-16V targeting pod and Chinese naval vessels monitored by Taiwanese warships.

The pressure campaign continued. On May 20, Taiwan detected 24 aircraft sorties, six naval vessels, and three official ships, with 13 aircraft crossing the median line. By the morning of May 21, seven more aircraft sorties, seven naval vessels, and one official ship operated around Taiwan's waters, with six aircraft again crossing into the northern and southwestern ADIZ. Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense characterized Chinese military actions as the sole source of disruption to regional peace and stability.

The May 19 imagery release came one day before Taiwan's legislature was scheduled to review funding for five U.S.-approved weapons systems. U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the situation on May 21, telling reporters at Joint Base Andrews that the United States will work on the Taiwan problem and claiming the situation is well in hand following a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
