Trump Administration Targets Minnesota With Billions in Funding Cuts

The administration of Donald Trump is targeting Minnesota through a series of funding freezes and lawsuits, leading the state to file multiple appeals and legal challenges. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) intend to withhold $515 million quarterly—totaling up to $2 billion annually—from 14 high-risk Medicaid programs. CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz rejected Minnesota's fraud prevention plan as "deeply insufficient," stating federal funds would be withheld until the state "cleans up its act."

Simultaneously, the U.S. Department of Agriculture froze over $129 million in awards for the state and Minneapolis and attempted to withhold $80 million in SNAP administrative funding. However, U.S. District Judge Laura Provinzino blocked the SNAP cuts, ruling that the USDA's 30-day deadline for eligibility reviews was unjustified and likely illegal. The U.S. Department of Justice also filed a lawsuit against Minnesota to end affirmative action hiring requirements.

Minnesota officials, including Temporary Human Services Commissioner Shireen Gandhi, have characterized these moves as "punitive" and "unprecedented," warning of "catastrophic consequences" for residents. Governor Tim Walz recently ended his campaign for a third term, stating he could not run while managing these federal attacks. President Trump has further intensified the pressure by announcing that starting February 1, the federal government will cease all payments to sanctuary cities and states.
