Republicans Plan Midterm Convention in Dallas Amid Funding Disputes

The Republican Party will hold a first-of-its-kind midterm convention at the American Airlines Center in Dallas on September 9-10 to rally voters before the November 3 elections. The event features 109 speakers and items, with Vice President JD Vance headlining the first night and President Donald Trump appearing both nights to deliver the closing keynote. The agenda focuses on tax cuts, border security, healthcare affordability, and the One Big Beautiful Bill, while notably omitting foreign policy and the war in Iran.

While the convention has raised between $42 million and $45 million, the host city is facing financial strain. Dallas officials estimate police security will cost $1.8 million, with an additional $14,000 for transportation and cleanup. These expenses come as the city manages a $30 million budget deficit and a $2.7 million police overtime shortfall.

Dallas City Council members have expressed concern over funding the event without a deposit from organizers. Kevin Oden, director of the Office of Emergency Management and Crisis Response, stated the city will track costs to seek grants or reimbursements. However, Assistant Chief Mark Villarreal noted that the city has historically never received reimbursement from the Secret Service for protectees. Some party strategists warn that centering the event on Trump, whose approval rating is 33%, could alienate independent voters.
