Rahul Gandhi's Student Outreach Sparks Political Clash in Indore

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi visited Indore on September 19, 2026, to interact with students and job aspirants as part of his Chhatron Ki Goonj initiative. The event, the fifth in a series including stops in Kota and Pune, focused on unemployment, paper leaks, and rising education costs. Gandhi alleged that India's major institutions have been captured by a network of political and corporate interests and claimed public education spending fell from 4.6% in 2014 to 2.6% currently.

The event faced significant logistical hurdles. After being denied access to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the Indian National Congress leased land opposite Regional Park for Rs 10.08 lakh. Tensions escalated when posters reading 'Jhooth Ki Goonj' appeared across the city; Congress accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of orchestrating the campaign, while the BJP claimed they were grassroots student protests.

Following the event, BJP leaders and former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan accused Gandhi of using students as political props. Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and BJP President Sanjay Saraogi further condemned Gandhi for allegedly mocking Prime Minister Narendra Modi's late mother, calling the conduct a display of political bankruptcy. Gandhi responded by contrasting government spending on celebrations with the lack of affordable hostels for rural students, asserting that the system prefers delusional 'andhbhakts' over curious students who ask questions.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh defended the initiative, alleging that the BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh have corrupted the education system. In contrast, government representatives cited an increase in the Gross Enrolment Ratio to 30% and new legislation to combat exam malpractices as evidence of progress.
