Trump Guard Deployment in DC Projected to Cost $1.4 Billion

The United States Department of Defense estimates that extending the National Guard deployment in Washington, D.C., through January 20, 2029, will cost approximately $1.4 billion. The mission, titled Make DC Safe and Beautiful, was ordered by Donald Trump on August 11, 2025, following the assault of a former DOGE Service staffer. While the operation peaked at 5,000 personnel during the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, it now maintains a baseline of 2,500 members at a monthly cost of $55 million.

Interim Commanding General Leland Blanchard reports that guardsmen have provided 788 medical assists, administered Narcan 325 times, and reunited 43 lost children. To reduce costs, the Guard awarded a $292 million contract to Placemakr to move troops from hotels into apartments. The mission is currently shifting resources toward high-crime areas, including Ward 8 and the Trinidad neighborhood.

Critics, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, have condemned the spending as a political stunt during a period of budget shortfalls caused by the Iran war. While a Niskanen Center study found the deployment deterred opportunistic property crime, D.C. police data and the study indicate that violent crime rates remained stable compared to 2025. The mission has faced legal challenges from the American Civil Liberties Union and local governments, and resulted in the death of one National Guard member in November.
