Virginia Attorney General Launches Voter Protection Section Before Midterms

Attorney General Jay Jones established a dedicated Voter Protection Section to defend voting rights and enforce state law ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones announced the creation of a dedicated Voter Protection Section within the Office of the Attorney General on October 13, 2026. Launched three weeks before the November 3 midterm elections, the unit consists of lawyers tasked with enforcing state election laws and the Virginia Voting Rights Act of 2021, which prohibits discriminatory practices based on race, color, or language minority group membership.

Led by Ajay Saini, a former U.S. Department of Justice trial attorney, the section will investigate voter intimidation, improper registration cancellations, absentee ballot denials, and interference with election administration. The unit will specifically monitor barriers facing students, military voters, and people with disabilities while coordinating with the Virginia Department of Elections and the attorney general's Federal Accountability Unit.

Jones stated the initiative is necessary as federal voting rights protections face challenges and the administration of President Donald Trump seeks greater control over state-conducted elections. The move follows recent legal disputes over mail ballot transmission and a 2024 controversy involving the removal of approximately 1,600 voters from rolls under former Governor Glenn Youngkin. The launch also coincides with reports of National Guard troops being stationed near vote drop-off boxes in Washington, D.C.
