Trump Administration Seeks $10 Million for Freedom 250 Security

The United States Department of the Interior is seeking $10 million in additional funding from Congress to reimburse the National Park Service for costs associated with the Freedom 250 semiquincentennial celebrations. The request covers expenses from the Great American State Fair, the Rededicate 250 prayer event, and the July 4th Salute to America fireworks show on the National Mall.

Officials attribute the funding gap to an "elevated security posture" necessitated by vandalism and threats, including a White House Correspondents Association dinner attack and an attempted terror attack at a UFC match. However, some officials characterized the request as covering routine National Park Service costs. The celebrations themselves faced criticism due to extreme heat causing hospitalizations, reports of thin crowds, and the controversial display of a Confederate flag after North Carolina declined to fund its booth.

Senator Jeff Merkley and other Democrats have condemned the request as an unacceptable bailout, noting that $150 million had already been allocated through the One Big Beautiful Bill. Merkley demanded a full accounting of spending from Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, arguing that private donors should cover the remaining costs. Representative Jared Huffman further alleged that Freedom 250 engaged in deceptive fundraising. In response, Freedom 250 dismissed the accusations as a partisan smear, claiming that divisive rhetoric forced the increase in security spending.
