Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu Begins State Visit to Pakistan

President Mohamed Muizzu arrived in Islamabad for a three-day state visit to strengthen bilateral ties and mark 60 years of diplomatic relations with Pakistan.

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu arrived in Islamabad on October 20, 2026, for a three-day state visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The visit marks the first time a Maldivian president has visited Pakistan in 11 years and coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations established in 1966.

Accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and a high-level delegation, Muizzu is scheduled to meet President Asif Ali Zardari, who will host a state banquet in his honor. He will also hold restricted and delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Sharif to review bilateral relations and expand cooperation in trade, investment, defense, maritime security, health, education, tourism, agriculture, and climate change.

The diplomatic engagement aligns with Muizzu's Maldives First policy, which emphasizes regional partnerships for national development. This outreach occurs as India continues to support the financial stability of the Maldives, recently executing a 3,000 crore rupee currency swap rollover.

Planned activities for the visit include the Pakistan-Maldives Business Forum and the signing of several agreements and memorandums of understanding intended to boost commercial and strategic engagement between the two nations.
