Trump Collects $200 Billion in Tariffs Amid Legal Challenges

Donald Trump issued more than 40 executive orders between January 20 and December 15, 2025, to impose reciprocal and fentanyl tariffs targeting China, Mexico, and Canada. U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported that these measures generated more than $200 billion in revenue during that period.

President Trump claimed the tariffs brought in over $18 trillion in 10 months, though critics argued this figure is impossible as total U.S. imports for the previous year were roughly $3.3 trillion. These claims contrast with the official agency data reporting the $200 billion total.

The legality of the duties is currently before the Supreme Court of the United States. The action follows an August ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which found the president lacked the authority to impose such tariffs without the consent of Congress. In response to the dispute, companies including Costco have filed lawsuits seeking full refunds of the duties paid.
