Environmental Groups Sue Trump Administration Over Species Act Exemptions

A coalition of environmental groups is suing the Trump administration after the government exempted Gulf of Mexico drilling from the Endangered Species Act.

A coalition of environmental organizations, including the Sierra Club, Healthy Gulf, and Friends of the Earth, filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to challenge the removal of Endangered Species Act protections for oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. The legal action follows a unanimous vote by the Endangered Species Committee, known as the God Squad, to grant a blanket exemption for offshore activities. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth initiated the move, citing national security concerns following U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran that closed the Strait of Hormuz and threatened the American oil supply.

Plaintiffs, represented by Earthjustice, argue the administration is abusing national security exceptions to benefit the fossil fuel industry and risk the extinction of over two dozen species, most notably the critically endangered Rice's whale. Meanwhile, the administration maintains the action is necessary for energy security and points to record U.S. offshore oil production in 2025. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum led the committee's vote to finalize the exemptions.

These developments coincide with a broader effort by the Trump administration to weaken wildlife protections. In Alaska, the government proposed regulations to shield energy companies from legal consequences for the incidental killing of polar bears and Pacific walruses in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. This follows a March 30 ruling by a federal judge in California that struck down four separate regulations aimed at weakening the Endangered Species Act, calling them unlawful and arbitrary.
