Kyiv Independent Editor Rejects Role as Government Propaganda Tool
Olga Rudenko asserts the Kyiv Independent must maintain journalistic independence by reporting on Ukrainian corruption and Russian military successes despite reader preferences.
Editor Olga Rudenko stated that the Kyiv Independent must resist becoming a propaganda tool, even as readers show a preference for stories focusing on Russian suffering and Ukrainian military strikes. Speaking before a storytelling event in London, Rudenko argued that failing to balance coverage with reports on Russian military successes and Ukrainian corruption misrepresents the conflict.
Rudenko emphasized that the publication remains unaffiliated with the government and continues to report critically on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. She specifically cited Zelenskyy's previous attempts to neutralize anti-corruption agencies and the concentration of power around the presidency. While elections remain suspended under martial law, Rudenko noted that a critical mass of Ukrainians do not currently support holding presidential elections.
The Kyiv Independent operates with a staff of 99 and has grown its membership-based revenue model to 36,000 contributing readers. The publication's largest membership base is located in London, while its operations are based in Kyiv.
