EU Digital Services Act Faces Tech and Political Resistance

The European Union implemented the Digital Services Act in February 2024 to increase online safety and transparency through binding rules for technology companies. The legislation targets very large online platforms and search engines, specifically naming Google LLC, Amazon.com Inc., and X Corp. as entities subject to the strictest regulatory measures.

Implementation of the act faces significant challenges due to the financial and political influence of major tech firms and dysfunctional policy execution at the national level. US President Donald Trump has provided fierce pushback against the legislation.

Critics of the framework, such as Marin Husovec of the London School of Economics, argue that the law's emphasis on risk assessment is too vague. This ambiguity complicates the process for technology firms to effectively mitigate potential harms to public security and civic discourse.
