Trump Uses Federal Power to Target Media and Opponents

President Donald Trump has launched a campaign to silence political opponents and media outlets using federal government power. The effort includes filing $1 billion defamation lawsuits against the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal over reporting on his personal finances and ties to Jeffrey Epstein. While Trump paid $5 million each to CNN and Fox News to settle separate defamation suits, a federal judge in Miami dismissed his case against the New York Times, calling the complaint a public relations report.

Trump has reversed his own executive order on ending federal censorship to pursue critics. He directed the Federal Communications Commission to pressure local stations to ban comedian Jimmy Kimmel, and ordered federal prosecutors to target enemies including former FBI Director James Comey. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated the Justice Department would target individuals using hate speech, while Attorney General Liam Bondi directed efforts to target progressive donor organizations suspected of contributing to terrorism.

These actions have sparked criticism from some conservatives. Senator Ted Cruz warned that using regulatory power to silence figures like Kimmel creates a dangerous precedent that could eventually be used against conservatives. The Wall Street Journal editorial board also expressed concern over the use of prosecutorial power to target political opposition.
