Trump Administration Triples Self-Deportation Bonus to $3,000

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced a temporary increase in financial incentives for undocumented immigrants to voluntarily leave the United States by December 31, 2025. Secretary Kristi Noem stated the government is tripling the previous $1,000 bonus to a $3,000 holiday stipend. To qualify, eligible individuals must register via the CBP Home app, which also provides a free one-way flight and forgiveness for certain civil fines or overstay penalties.

Administrators frame the program as a cost-saving measure, arguing that voluntary departures are significantly cheaper than the $17,000 average cost of traditional arrests and removals. Since January 2025, Noem claims 1.9 million people have self-deported, although some reports suggest this figure may be closer to 1 million. This initiative is part of President Donald Trump's broader immigration agenda, which includes a $170 billion funding increase for border security and a goal of 1 million annual deportations.

Parallel to the voluntary program, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has ramped up aggressive operations, including nationwide arrests of undocumented immigrants with criminal records for burglary and kidnapping. The administration has also revoked 85,000 visas and targeted those who entered through legal pathways, such as humanitarian parole. Secretary Noem warned that those who refuse the holiday incentive face arrest and permanent exclusion from the United States.
