Pimco Predicts State-Level AI Policy Shift
Libby Cantrill of Pimco expects AI infrastructure policy to shift to the state level as bipartisan opposition to data centers grows across the United States.
Investment professional Libby Cantrill predicts that artificial intelligence policy in the United States will be determined primarily at the state level rather than the federal level. This shift is expected if President Donald Trump maintains his current opposition to federal regulation.
Cantrill identifies a bipartisan trend in 36 states where gubernatorial candidates are running on platforms that oppose data centers. In Ohio, candidates from both political parties are advocating for a full statewide moratorium on these facilities.
Cantrill expects increased friction and more restrictions on AI infrastructure through 2027. She characterizes the current political climate regarding data centers as "very bad," noting that "politics leads policy."
