European Natural Gas Prices Climb Toward Multi-Year Highs

European natural gas prices are rising toward multi-year highs as the region enters winter with storage levels well below the seasonal average.

European natural gas prices, tracked by the Dutch TTF benchmark, have risen to approximately 83 euros per megawatt-hour. This surge occurs despite an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine and improved energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz.

Europe faces a challenging winter season characterized by the absence of Qatari LNG exports and low storage levels. As of October 7, storage stood at 73.1%, significantly lower than the 15-year seasonal average of 90%.

Financial analysts offer diverging views on the price trajectory. Goldman Sachs Private Wealth Management previously suggested that prices might need to reach 100 euros to attract Asian LNG cargoes to Europe. Conversely, Citi analysts maintain a more bearish fourth-quarter base case forecast of 56 euros.

Citi attributes this potential easing to warm weather, a shift in Ukraine from a net importer to a potential net exporter of gas, and significant industrial demand destruction, which saw September demand drop 8% year-over-year.
