Israel Expands Gaza Control to 70 Percent via Yellow Line
The Israeli military has increased its control of the Gaza Strip to 70 percent by establishing a fortified defensive line of 32 outposts.
The Israeli military has expanded its control of the Gaza Strip from 53 percent to approximately 70 percent since a ceasefire with Hamas took effect last year. To secure this territory, the military established 32 fortified outposts along a new dividing line called the Yellow Line. This forward defensive line is designed to protect Israeli communities and operational activity.
To maintain the security of this zone, forces are destroying tunnels and removing nearly all structures on the Israeli-controlled side. Military officials cited the discovery of a sprawling tunnel in the Shuja’iyya neighborhood as an example of why these measures are necessary. Israeli officials state these actions prevent a repeat of the October 7, 2023, attacks.
This military entrenchment occurs while the second phase of a U.S.-brokered peace plan remains stalled. The plan requires Israeli troop withdrawals in exchange for Hamas disarming and the installation of a civilian administration. Progress is currently hindered by opposition from coalition partners of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the approach of Israeli elections on October 27.
