U.S. Monitors Nigeria's 2027 Elections and Conditions Aid
Congressman Riley Moore announced the U.S. will monitor Nigeria's 2027 general elections while the House considers restricting security and financial aid over religious persecution.
U.S. Congressman Riley Moore announced that the administration of President Donald Trump will closely monitor the conduct and results of Nigeria's 2027 general elections. Moore stated that Washington is paying close attention to how the polls unfold and are executed.
Simultaneously, the U.S. House of Representatives is considering an appropriations bill containing aggressive language regarding the persecution of Christians and restrictions on security assistance to the Nigerian government. Moore is a co-sponsor of the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026, which would mandate the U.S. Secretary of State to report on religious persecution and mass atrocities in Nigeria.
Financial pressure is also mounting through a State Department funding bill passed by the House Appropriations Committee in April 2026. This legislation proposes withholding 50 percent of financial assistance to Nigeria until the government takes effective steps to prosecute Fulani militia groups and curb religious violence.
