US Deficit Approaches $2 Trillion Amid Rising Treasury Yields
The United States faces a nearly $2 trillion federal deficit and rising interest rates driven by high debt issuance and conflict in Iran.
The United States is experiencing severe economic pressure as the federal deficit nears $2 trillion and 10-year Treasury yields climb above 5%. This fiscal instability is driven by high federal debt issuance and market volatility following the start of the war in Iran on February 28, which spiked oil prices and increased expectations for Federal Reserve interest rate hikes. These high rates have subsequently slowed the housing market, with 30-year fixed mortgage rates remaining near 7.5%.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has advocated for reducing the deficit to below 4% of GDP by the end of President Donald Trump's term. However, current projections place the deficit significantly higher, between 6.0% and 6.2% of GDP. While some officials suggest artificial intelligence could spark the growth needed to offset the debt, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget reports that balancing the budget through growth alone would require an unlikely decade of 7.2% annual GDP growth.
Fiscal solutions remain stalled by political division ahead of the November 3 midterms. Tensions include efforts by Democratic Representative Hakeem Jeffries to reverse $1 trillion in healthcare cuts, complicating the path toward the deficit targets proposed by the Treasury.
