AI Memory Boom Triggers Global Electronics Price Hikes

A massive surge in artificial intelligence infrastructure has triggered a global shortage of random access memory (RAM) chips, specifically DRAM and NAND flash. Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron Technology have strategically reallocated silicon wafer capacity toward high-bandwidth memory (HBM) to support AI data centers and GPUs, reducing the supply available for consumer electronics. This shift has caused some memory prices to spike sixfold since September 2025, with DRAM prices rising 50% in a single quarter and further 40-50% jumps predicted for early 2026.

These costs are rippling through the hardware industry. Nvidia Corporation and AMD are implementing price hikes for graphics cards, with the RTX 5090 potentially reaching $5,000. Device manufacturers including ASUSTeK Computer Inc., HP, and Raspberry Pi have raised prices, while others like Dell and Lenovo may downgrade standard RAM specifications to manage costs. The International Data Corporation warns that this is a strategic reallocation of capacity rather than a cyclical mismatch, signaling the end of an era of cheap memory.

To prioritize high-margin AI customers, Micron Technology discontinued its Crucial consumer brand. While industry giants like Apple may be insulated by long-term contracts, analysts predict global smartphone sales will drop by at least 2% and PC markets by 4.9% due to inflated retail prices. Relief is not anticipated until at least late 2026 or 2027, as new production facilities, such as Micron's plant in Idaho, remain under construction.
