Pakistan Seeks to Mediate Between Iran and United States

Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a telephone conversation on September 19, 2026, to address regional instability. Dar urged Iran to maintain uninterrupted energy supplies and ensure the safe, expeditious passage of commercial vessels, noting that maritime disruptions severely impact global supply chains and developing nations.

The diplomatic outreach follows a period of escalation after the United States suspended a June peace memorandum and launched strikes on Iranian territory on July 8. Iran responded by striking U.S. targets in several Gulf nations and restricting exports through the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, Houthi control of the Bab al-Mandab Strait has hindered Saudi Arabian oil exports.

Dar asserted that dialogue and diplomacy are the only viable means to ensure regional peace. The two ministers agreed to maintain close cooperation and scheduled a meeting in New York during the 81st United Nations General Assembly. To further these efforts, the Government of Pakistan is planning a high-level diplomatic mission to Tehran, potentially led by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, to mediate between Iran and the United States and address tensions involving Saudi Arabia and the Houthis.
