Major Central Banks Hold Interest Rates Steady Ahead of December

The United States Federal Reserve, European Central Bank, and Bank of Japan maintained current interest rates while delaying further policy decisions until December.

The United States Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, and the Bank of Japan all held interest rates steady last week. The three central banks are delaying further policy adjustments until their respective meetings in December.

In the United States, the decision to maintain rates was influenced by the political environment surrounding the mid-term elections. Federal Reserve Chair Warsh provided market guidance on future adjustments during a press conference, emphasizing that the bank continues to maintain a data-dependent approach.

While the Federal Reserve remains patient, the European Central Bank and Bank of Japan face pressure from rising energy prices and core inflation. A December rate hike by the European Central Bank is considered likely if gas prices remain above €77. Similarly, the Bank of Japan is weighing a potential 25 basis point increase to align with its inflation targets.
