Trump Delays Mexico Tariffs for 90-Day Negotiation Window

President Donald Trump delayed a planned tariff increase on Mexican imports for 90 days following a phone call with President Claudia Sheinbaum.

President Donald Trump announced a 90-day delay on increasing tariffs on Mexican imports, reversing a previous assertion that the August 1 deadline would not be extended. The decision followed a phone call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, preventing a proposed 30 percent tariff from taking effect on Friday.

Under the agreement, Mexico will maintain existing duties, including a 25 percent fentanyl tariff, a 25 percent tariff on cars, and a 50 percent tariff on steel, aluminum, and copper. Goods compliant with the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) remain exempt from the 25 percent tariffs previously imposed by Trump. Mexico's economy ministry reports that approximately 85 percent of Mexican exports meet these rules of origin.

President Sheinbaum stated the extension allows both nations to build a long-term agreement through dialogue. Mexico's Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard characterized the reprieve as a significant achievement, claiming the pause was secured without any concessions from Mexico and maintains the country's preferential access to the U.S. market.
